Depending on how detailed the qualification is and how long it might take to complete, ILM qualifications fall into three sizes:

Awards are the shortest and most concise qualification, accounting for 10 to 120 hours of learning at a return of 1-12 credits.

Certificates (130 to 360 hours of learning) provide a broader base of knowledge and skills, and are awarded between 13 and 36 credits.

Diplomas are the most comprehensive qualification, with an extensive programme of learning amounting to over 370 hours of learning for 37 or more credits.

Regulated qualifications are reviewed and accredited by a regulatory body that assures the qualification offers quality syllabus, learning outcomes, and assessment and teaching strategies. The assessments of regulated qualifications are undertaken fairly to guarantee that the certificate is recognised as a valid achievement. Regulated qualifications are recognised worldwide and provide the pathway to a higher level of study. Also, employers value regulated qualifications, and the employees who achieve regulated qualifications get a competitive advantage over others.

In the UK, qualifications at schools and colleges are regulated by Ofqual, which maintains a register that provides more details on each qualification and the awarding bodies. To ensure quality assurance, regulated qualifications are reviewed periodically so learners obtain up-to-date skills and knowledge and have confidence in the qualifications they pursue.

All ILM qualifications are awarded by The City and Guilds of London Institute which was founded in 1878 and is incorporated by Royal Charter and, are regulated by OfQual.
